Prep softball: Five to watch

Sophie Frost

Jackson | Sr. | P/1B

As a junior, Frost was named a first-team All-Wesco 4A pitcher. She led her team to the district championship, allowing just one run in three tournament games and pitching a one-hitter against Snohomish in the championship. She finished the season with 200 strikeouts in 142 innings, but also performed at the plate, hitting .423.

“Sophie is unquestionably our team’s inspirational and emotional leader,” Jackson head coach Kyle Peacocke said. “Her drive to compete and love for her teammates is truly amazing.”

Alyssa Simons

Snohomish | Sr. | P/OF

Simons split time with freshman Bailee Greenlee as the Panthers’ primary starting pitcher last season. She finished the year with a 10-2 record and a 1.10 ERA. She batted .397 with a .776 on-base percentage, 25 RBI, 11 doubles, one triple and three home runs.

Led by Simons, the Panthers should make a charge toward a league championship this season.

Sydney Taggart

Everett | Sr. | P/SS

Taggart, The Herald’s 2015 All-Area player of the year, batted .505 with eight home runs, 35 RBI and 38 runs for the Seagulls, who placed second at the 3A state tournament. She had a 16-1 record in the pitcher’s circle with a 1.71 earned-run average and 133 strikeouts.

“Sydney will bring leadership and experience to the Seagull softball team,” Everett head coach Mike Millar said. “Sydney was at her best last season when on the biggest stage, leading us to … a district championship and a spot in the 3A state championship game.”

Maddie Morgan

Lynnwood | Jr. | SS

The University of Alabama commit batted .655 with a .756 on-base percentage last season. She had 13 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 24 RBI.

“Offensively, we will see Maddie towards the top of our lineup, matching if not beating her on-base percentage from last season,” Lynnwood head coach Sara Hall said. “As always, she will lead by example. She’s the first athlete on the field. She puts her team first. She is positive and kind-hearted and we are lucky to have her.”

Alyson Matriotti

Archbishop Murphy | Sr. | C

Matriotti, who has signed to play at Seattle University next year, batted .629 last season with 12 doubles, three home runs and 23 RBI. She was the Cascade Conference Offensive Player of the Year and the Co-Offensive Player of the Year the year prior to that.

“Alyson is one of the best catchers I’ve coached and is also an offensive threat,” Archbishop Murphy head coach Stephanie Harmon said. “Her speed, skill and mental awareness make her an all-around great player. She’s got a competitive edge and drive to be the best and is always trying to improve all areas of her game.”
