ORLANDO, Fla. — A person familiar with the situation says the University of Central Florida has hired Johnny Dawkins as its men’s basketball coach.
The person spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the school has not announced the move.
Dawkins, who will be the Knights seventh head coach since the program’s inception, was fired last week at Stanford after eight seasons. ESPN first reported UCF had hired Dawkins.
Dawkins replaces Donnie Jones, who was fired on March 10.
A former All-American and national player of the year at Duke, Dawkins is also an ex-Blue Devils assistant coach. He was fired by Stanford after eight mostly unsuccessful seasons coaching the Cardinal.
