I want to publicly thank The Herald staff for the compassion and care that has been shown regarding people impacted by the Highway 530 Slide in Oso. Two years ago, our community was overwhelmed by national media. It often seemed they didn’t care about how much hurt they might cause to people as long as they got a story out of it. Regional agencies often fell into that same trap as they competed. The Herald staff — especially Eric Stevick, Rikki King and Genna Martin — stood out for their desire to tell the underlying stories, not just get ratings through a quick, hurtful skimming.
As the people and communities have struggled with recovery, The Herald has continued the commitment to telling their stories with dignity and care. Although the subjects may be controversial (lawsuits, buyouts, etc.,) The Herald hasn’t engaged in shock journalism. Survivors and family members of the 43 who were lost asked for privacy this year as we approached the two-year anniversary and that request was honored. It made a huge impact at the gathering on Tuesday. Not feeling their grief was on display to the world helped many of the attendees. So, from myself and many others, I say thank you to The Herald staff.
