The Wednesday letter writer, “Senate right to defer to electorate,” disagrees with Tuesday’s letter, “GOP is doing the wrong thing,” and states: “He conveniently overlooks the term with Advice and Consent of the Senate.” The Tuesday letter writer did not overlook these words — check his penultimate sentence. Seems to me he’s well aware there’s no mandated schedule by which the advice and consent must be given and, thus, this Senate can (and apparently will) consciously provide neither until next year, if then. Unfortunately for the Senate (because it’s left looking more inane than ever) the president did follow the Constitution and nominated a justice. It’s amusing to watch McConnell (et al) now uncharacteristically reaching across the aisle by citing past (and perhaps incorrect) positions taken by some Democrats as precedence. Note: The Daily Herald’s March 17 editorial (“Senate Republicans hiding behind the Biden rule”) covered this whole subject quite clearly. The current GOP position is plain old pompous-assery. (Jon Stewart, where are you when we need you?)
