EDMONDS — A Sunday night fire at Madrona K-8 School caused more than $250,000 damage and canceled Monday classes.
The cause has not been determined, but is not believed to be suspicious, officials said.
Firefighters were dispatched around 8:05 p.m. for an automatic fire alarm at the school at 9300 236th St. SW.
“Firefighters found black smoke billowing from the building and called for a full commercial fire response,” said Leslie Hynes, a spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1, which provides fire service in the City of Edmonds. “Shortly after that, they called for a second alarm.”
Firefighters from Fire District 1, Lynnwood and Shoreline responded. “We had about 40 firefighters on the scene,” Hynes said.
No one was inside the building at the time of the fire. There were no injuries. Crews made a quick attack and had the fire extinguished within 15 minutes.
“They were able to keep the fire contained to the faculty room,” Hynes said. “The adjacent school office and the section of hall just outside the school office and faculty room had smoke and water damage. Closed doors kept smoke from entering the classrooms and they appear to be undamaged.”
Fire investigators determined the fire started in a storage space off the faculty room. They were unable to pinpoint an exact cause, but noted there was nothing suspicious about the fire
