The Toronto Blue Jays claimed first baseman Jesus Montero on Monday after he was placed on waivers by the Seattle Mariners.
Montero had been battling Dae-Ho Lee and Stefen Romero for the job as Seattle’s right-handed-hitting backup to first baseman Adam Lind, a left-handed hitter.
Montero, 26, was acquired by Seattle from the New York Yankees in January of 2012. He appeared in 208 games in parts of four seasons, batting .247 with 27 doubles, one triple, 24 home runs and 92 RBI.
The move leaves the Mariners with 32 players in their major-league camp: 27 roster players and five non-roster invitees.
The Mariners open the 2016 season April 4 at Texas.
