Lynnwood’s Pivec wins national 3-point competition

PEARLAND, Texas – Lynnwood senior Mikayla Pivec won the American Family Insurance Girls 3-Point Championship Friday at the High School Slam &3-Point Championships at Dawson High School in Pearland, Texas.

The event aired Sunday afternoon on CBS.

Pivec, the Gatorade Washington Player of the Year, defeated Desinty Slocum, a McDonald’s All-American from Mountain View High in Meridian, Idaho, 15-14 in the championship round.

“It means a lot,” Pivec said in a USA Today article. “There was a lot of All-Americans here. The time put in has paid off in these competitions. It’s been a great experience, I’m glad I was able to experience this.”

Slocum, who is committed to Maryland, netted the most points in the first round with 19. Pivec, an Oregon State commit, scored 12 before getting 19 in round two to advance to the championship.

“Destiny is a very good shooter,” Pivec said. “I’ve played open gym with her in the past and I know what she’s capable of, and I was able to get the win.”

After defeating Slocum, Pivec took on boys 3-point champion Kyle Guy in the Samsung Battle of the Champions. Both Pivec and Guy finished with 19 points and were named co-champions of the event. Guy, who played at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis and was the Gatorade Player of the Year for Indiana, has signed with Virginia.

“To put 19 against Kyle, I was proud of my shooting today,” Pivec said. “Kyle’s a great shooter and he didn’t have his best round, 19 is very good, but he opened the door a little bit for me.

“If I could have hit one of my last couple of shots I would have beat him.”
