Regarding the article, “Gov. Inslee approves harsher DUI penalties”: Anyone can make a mistake, even when it comes to a DUI. But, more than one DUI is indicative of a pattern of behavior that is unacceptable. It’s a good thing that Gov. Inslee is approving harsher penalties for convictions of driving under the influence.
Considering the horrendous amount of deaths and suffering, the catastrophic injuries and loss of property so many people suffer at the hands of inebriates behind the wheel, it’s high time some new laws were put into effect to make it truly burdensome for those who refuse to discipline themselves when it comes to getting behind the wheel of an automobile.
I would suggest one further step: the confiscation of the involved automobile itself. Such a possibility would surely weigh on the minds of all who drive and all those who knowingly allow some known inebriate to borrow their automobile. It could be called “shared responsibility.”
