Former Jackson High School basketball standout Jason Todd has decided to transfer after two seasons at the University of Portland.
Todd, a 2014 Jackson graduate, was not available for comment on Friday. But he recently made the announcement on his Instagram page.
In the announcement, Todd said that he had “come to the decision that it’s best to transfer following the end of this school year.” After thanking his Portland teammates, coaches, trainers and the school’s faculty and students, Todd said that he believes “my best is yet to come and am excited to see where my journey takes me.”
In two seasons at Portland, Todd played in 60 of the team’s 65 games, including 20 starts. He averaged 4.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 23.3 minutes a game as a freshman, and 4.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 20.7 minutes a game as a sophomore.
Portland recently went through a coaching change. Eric Reveno, who recruited Todd to Portland, was fired on March 15 after 10 seasons and replaced two weeks later by Terry Porter, a 17-year NBA player who spent 10 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers. Porter started NBA coaching in 2002 as an assistant with Sacramento, and over the next 12 seasons was a head coach with Milwaukee and Phoenix for most of three seasons.
Todd, a two-time Gatorade Washington Player of the Year at Jackson, expects to end up at another school and is currently considering his options. If he transfers to another Division I program he would have to sit out one season, but would still have two years of eligibility remaining. If he transfers to a non-Division I program he could be eligible to play next season.
