The NFL draft is quickly approaching. It takes place April 28-30, with Round 1 on the first day, Rounds 2-3 on the second day, and Rounds 4-7 on the third day.
The Seattle Seahawks head into the draft owning nine picks in the seven rounds, including the 26th-overall selection in the first round. The other picks are one second rounder (56th overall), two third rounders (91, 97), one fourth rounder (124), one fifth rounder (171), one sixth rounder (215) and two seventh rounders (225, 247).
The Seahawks have what would appear to be some obvious needs they need to address in the draft. However, Seattle general manager John Schenider has never been known for making conventional moves. The fabled 2012 draft included “reaching” in the first round for defensive end Bruce Irvin, as well as using a third-round pick on an undersized quarterback named Russell Wilson having just signed another QB (Matt Flynn) to a big-money free-agent contract. When the pundits say the Seahawks should zig, Schneider likes to zag.
Will this be the year Schneider finally follows conventional wisdom? Last week in a radio interview with KJR, Schneider called it a deep draft, and he also hinted at the possibility of trading out of the first round again.
On the blog I’ll be spending the days leading up to the draft looking at each position, listing the top prospects in the draft and examining Seattle’s needs. Here’s the schedule:
Wednesday: Quarterbacks
Thursday: Running backs, fullbacks
Friday: Wide receivers, tight ends
Saturday: Tackles, guards, centers
Sunday: Defensive tackles, defensive ends
Monday: Inside linebackers, outside linebackers
Tuesday: Cornerbacks, safeties
Wednesday: Kickers, punters, long snappers
