Plant myths: Hear Cass Turnbull speak at 7 p.m. May 5, Edmonds Public Safety Complex, 250 Fifth Ave. N., Edmonds. Free. Turnbull, an arborist, teacher and author, talks about “The Seven Myths of Site, Selection and Care of Trees.” Turnball founded PlantAmnesty to educate the commercial and public sectors on responsible pruning and landscape management practices.

Say flower!: A workshop on photographing spring gardens is 1 to 5 p.m. May 7, Meerkerk Gardens, 3531 Meerkerk Lane, Greenbank, Whidbey Island. Spring in spring: Noon to 1 p.m. May 21, Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens with Master Gardeners of Snohomish County. Learn how to amend your soil, what seeds are best for our area and how to successfully germinate them. Get ideas for creative ways to blend ornamentals and edibles in your landscape. Class at Jennings Park, 6915 Armar Road, Marysville. Meet at the front entrance of the master gardeners’ demonstration garden.

Mother’s Day at the Garden: noon to 4 p.m. May 8, Meerkerk Gardens, 3531 Meerkerk Lane, Greenbank, Whidbey Island. $10; free for younger than 16. Harp concert on the lawn. Stroll the 10 acres of rhododendrons. Slices of Whidbey Island Pies will be for sale; www.meerkerkgardens.org.

“Viva Color!” Add a little joy to downtown Everett containers and beds. Join parks staff in planting hundreds of colorful flowers from 8:30-10 a.m. May 13 and collect this year’s commemorative button. Gloves and trowels are provided. Meet at the corner of Hewitt and Colby avenues.

Green thumbs: Garden of Hope, a new community garden behind Snohomish Church of the Nazarene, 1017 13th St., is slated to open May 9. Learn healthy dietary habits and how to grow fresh produce. Growers are asked to give 10 percent of all produce to the local food bank. Garden beds will rent for $35 for the season, plus a $15 refundable clean-up deposit. Reserve a raised bed by emailing garden@snonaz.org.

Floretum Garden Club has a $1,500 scholarship for a high school graduate, community college student or an individual planning a career in a horticultural field. Mukilteo Way Garden Club is offering a $1,000 Scholarship for horticulture studies at Edmonds Community College. Current EdCC students, high school students and adult learners are eligible.
