EVERETT — Area business leaders have started a campaign to speed up the delivery of Sound Transit light rail northward.
The Light Rail to Everett initiative is being run by Economic Alliance Snohomish County. It supports an alternative proposal released this week to build Link light rail to Everett by 2033, while also including the Paine Field industrial area. That’s eight years sooner than envisioned in initial plans for Sound Transit 3 — ST3 for short — and 10 years after light rail is scheduled to start serving the Lynnwood Transit Center.
The Sound Transit Board plans to finish drafting the ST3 ballot measure in June. The proposal also would add bus service and expand light rail to Tacoma, Ballard, West Seattle and Issaquah. The $50 billion project would cost an average household an estimated $400 more per year through a hike in property tax, sales tax and car-tab fees.
Sound Transit staff have scheduled a presentation about ST3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Everett Station, 3201 Smith Ave. An online survey about the proposal is available at www.soundtransit3.org.
