I found reading Kathleen Parker’s column on Bernie Sanders and the pope to be just another tiresome over simplification of capitalist dynamics. (April 11, “Would Sanders rather make a run for pope?”) She talks like the powerful God of capitalism, pure of human moralism, will continue to make all our lives better. She talks like a fairer distribution of wealth will destroy the profit motive. Suddenly people will no longer be driven by greed and ambition. Fancy words and passionate arguments, mixed with careful criticism of Sanders, don’t cover up her black-and-white thinking.
The profit motive, which any idiot knows has greatly enhanced our lives, will still function very well in a fairer system. I haven’t heard a single plausible argument to the contrary from any commentator. Parker said almost nothing during her rant. This a not a fight between socialism and capitalism. People that make it this far have an agenda. This election is about common sense ways to make life in America more fair and more workable for all of us. Government doesn’t have to be the problem, as Reagan said. Actually, the government is the rule maker for life in America. Maybe we could have some rules that are reasonable and measured rather than the elitist free-for-all that our present economy looks like.
