EVERETT — An Edmonds man accused of clobbering his roommate with a baseball bat spiked with screws has been charged with assault.
Police allegedly found multiple homemade weapons in the man’s bedroom, including a makeshift shotgun and more spiked bats and clubs. A bloody bat was located in a laundry hamper. Police suspect that’s where Ryan McCoy tossed it after bludgeoning his roommate.
The victim suffered a fractured skull, a broken nose and brain bleeding.
He told police the March 23 attack happened after he and McCoy argued over a coin jar. The man accused McCoy of stealing the change from his van.
He told police McCoy later charged into his room with the bat. He pushed the defendant once, before the attack happened, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Scott Halloran wrote in court papers.
McCoy, 21, pleaded not guilty to second-degree domestic violence assault with a deadly weapon. He remained behind bars on $150,000 bail. His trial is scheduled for June 3.
His mother reportedly told police that McCoy had been using methamphetamine. She also said that he told her earlier in the day that he didn’t like the way their roommate spoke to him. He threatened to assault the man, court paper said.
The woman heard the attack from another room and found the injured man in a pool of blood. She told her son and his girlfriend to leave, court papers said.
Officers found the victim lying in a hallway. He had obvious head injuries and was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
McCoy was arrested as he was walking away from his mother’s house.
