My deepest appreciation to Dr. Sid Schwab and the Herald for allowing us into Dr. Schwab’s professional and psychological world (April 13 column, “A surgeon’s view of the brutal procedure of amputation.”
What a unique privilege.
Many times I have walked past those inner hospital doors that read, in large, stark, black or red, threatening lettering, “Do Not Enter” and wanted so much to know who were the people inside and what was happening in that world behind those doors, a world so separate and impenetrable and yet one that could profoundly change one’s personal world outside those doors with the knowledge and skill and dedication that existed within. Who were they? What did they feel?
How did they view that very special realm of theirs?
My sincere thanks to Dr. Schwab for allowing us through those doors and into that confluence of remarkable humanity and remarkable science, for his willingness to share this profound part of his life with us, and to the Herald for making it possible.
