Saturday’s statewide opening of the lowland lake trout fishing season is in the books and it was one of the best in several years. But not all the fish were caught on Saturday, and this weekend could be just as productive as the opener.
It’s difficult to say where the top action will be, but a longtime rule of thumb says “go to one of the lakes that was hot on opening day.” That strategy doesn’t always work, because conditions change and some of the smaller lakes get fished out relatively quickly. It works more often than not, however, so here are five of the best opening-day lakes that are also on the list of waters stocked with tagged rainbows worth prizes in the state Department of Fish Wildlife’s season-long trout derby: Lake Sixteen (11.4 trout kept/released on the opener), Martha Lake (Alderwood Manor, 8.8), Lake Ki (5.9), Storm Lake (5.8) and Lake Bosworth (5.1).
Martha Lake probably will remain productive the longest since it’s a little larger and a little deeper than some of the others.
Bank fish with a slip sinker rig and garlic-scented pink or chartreuse Power Bait, or troll a 50-50 or chrome/red head Dick Nite spoon or dark woolly bugger fly with one small split shot.
