CAMANO ISLAND — The eighth annual Women’s Expo at the Camano Center features a fashion show, massages, mammograms and lessons in dancing, yoga and cooking.
More than 90 businesses and organizations are expected to have booths at the expo Saturday. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 606 Arrowhead Road.
“It really promotes businesses, services, products and resources that are tailored to women,” said Karen Conway, assistant director at the center. “It’s promoting the businesses but it’s also bringing that information to women in the area.”
Admission is free. Lunch is $10 and prices vary for raffles, shopping or getting drinks at the martini bar.
The event has drawn up to 1,000 people in past years. It’s a great place to reconnect with friends and neighbors or research local products and services, Conway said.
Among the vendors are Movement Arts Yoga &Pilates, Windermere Real Estate, Simply Charming Candles, Camano Animal Shelter Association, Mary Trimble Books and Shipwreck Coffee.
Laurie’s Boutique is putting on a fashion show. Food blogger Jeff Lemkin plans to give cooking demonstrations and women can participate in dance demonstrations, including Zumba and belly dancing.
Swedish Hospital is bringing its Breast Care Express mobile mammogram unit. Women can make appointments before the event at mammappointments.swedish.org or by calling 206-320-2500 and leaving a message for a scheduler to call back. The scheduler can help with questions about cost and insurance, Conway said. Most insurance companies cover mammograms.
Sometimes women put off mammograms because they live far away from a hospital or can’t get time off of work, Breast Care Express program manager Darlene Fanus said in a news release. Going to events such as the Women’s Expo on Camano Island helps doctors reach those people.
Organizers have added a new event to this year’s expo.
They’ll be giving one local caregiver a surprise self-care package. A committee accepted nominations and plans to announce the winner during the event.
“It’s really about giving them the opportunity to kind of relax and take care of themselves for a little while,” Conway said.
The expo is a day of “education, entertainment and pampering” for women, she said.
It’s also a fundraiser for the Camano Center and all proceeds go toward services for people on Camano Island.
