Seahawks draft day 2 thread: DT Reed nabbed (update 6)

It’s day 2 of the NFL draft. Rounds 2 and 3 take place Friday, beginning at 4 p.m. Teams have seven minutes to make selections.

The Seahawks will be significant players in today’s action as they own four picks: one in the second round (56th overall) and three in the third round (90, 94, 97). That’s good news for Seattle, considering Seahawks general manager John Schneider has said this is the strongest draft since he took over in 2010, and Seattle coach Pete Carroll described that stretch in the third round as the meat of the draft.

The Seahawks selected Texas A&M tackle Germain Ifedi 31st overall in the first round, addressing what’s viewed as Seattle’s need on the offensive line. Schneider said Thursday night following Ifedi’s selection that he was targeting offensive and defensive line in the first round. Therefore, expect the defensive line to be addressed at some point Thursday.

Fortunately for Seattle, there remain plenty of well-regarded defensive linemen still available. Of the six players who were ranked in the first round by NFL.com who are still available, four are defensive linemen. Among the defensive tackles who could still be available when the Seahawks select at 56 are Mississippi State’s Chris Jones, Florida’s Jonathan Bullard and Baylor’s Andrew Billings.

The Seahawks moved up seven spots in the second round, trading No. 56 to the Chicago Bears along with a fourth rounder (124th overall) in exchange for No. 49.

With No. 49 Seattle selected Alabama defensive tackle Jarran Reed. Reed measures in at 6-foot-3 and 307 pounds. He was projected as a first rounder, but slipped along with the rest of Alabama’s players — he was apparently the last player remaining in the green room.

The Seahawks have thus addressed both their main priorities with their first two picks. Seattle addressed the offensive line by selecting Germain Ifedi in the first round, and now the Seahawks shore up the defensive line, more specifically the loss of Brandon Mebane to free agency, in the second round.

Here’s some notes after Jarran Reed spoke with the Seattle media:

– Reed said he had a premonition he was going to be picked by the Seahawks. And get this, when he received the call from Seattle he was munching on some Skittles. How appropriate is that? The new Beast Mode?

– Reed said he played mostly 1-gap and 2-gap during his time with Alabama, and that his biggest strength is stopping the run. However, he also said he’s willing to do whatever asked along the defensive line.

– Reed’s teammates described Reed as an emotional leader at Alabama, and he said that’s always how he’s been, that he plays with a passion.

– Reed is a new father as his daughter, Jacey, was born on April 8.

Just a couple notes from Seahawks southeast area scout Jim Nagy on Jarran Reed:

– He said he was shocked Reed fell as far as he did out of the first round. He called Reed the best run stuffer he’s seen in a long time and that Reed should be ready to step in and contribute immediately. He called it unbelievable value.

– Reed was arrested for a DUI in July of 2014, but Nagy said he and the organization are convinced it was a one-time thing, that Reed has a good character, and that Reed had no other off-field problems.

The Seahawks selected Notre Dame running back C.J. Prosise at No. 90 with the first of their three third-round picks.

Prosise, who measures in at 6-foot and 220 pounds, ran for 1,029 yards on 157 carries and 11 touchdowns as a redshirt junior last season for the Fighting Irish. He played safety and wide receiver previously for Notre Dame, but was moved to running back last spring because of depth issues.

The Seahawks selected Ohio State tight end Nick Vannett at No. 94 with the second of their three third-round picks.

Vannett measures in at 6-foot-6 and 257 pounds. He caught 19 passes for 162 yards and no touchdowns last season.

UPDATE, 8:15 p.m.

The Seahawks selected Boise State guard Rees Odhiambo at No. 97 with the last of their three third-round picks.

Odhaimbo is listed at 6-foot-4 and 314 pounds. He’s a native of Kenya who didn’t begin playing football until high school, meaning he may have more untapped potential than the typical college player.
