The April 27 Herald editorial about funding the battle against the Zika virus is straight forward common sense: Do it now or pay higher costs in dollars and suffering in the future.
This disease could end up causing birth defects in many areas of our country. It could be tragic with the president’s funding proposal is having trouble in Congress.
Fortunately, Washington’s champion, Sen. Patty Murray is working on turning this around. The immediate influx of money from Ebola funds and our own health departments was a quick way to begin dealing with this increasing threat from Zika. But we need to make sure we are not setting ourselves up for more health problems by robbing Peter to pay Paul.
We can help by supporting Sen. Murray’s efforts by writing and calling our representatives, asking them to fund the battle against the Zika virus, repay the Ebola monies, and robustly fund our local health departments.
