SEATTLE — King County health officials are distributing special cardboard boxes for babies to sleep in. The program is aimed at reducing infant deaths.
KING-TV reported that they are being given to low-income parents who do not have a crib and have to share a full-size bed with their newborn
Baby bed boxes have been used for decades in Finland. They are designed to reduce infant deaths by helping to prevent suffocation. They also help babies maintain a healthy body temperature while they sleep.
Nurses with the King Co. Nurse-Family Partnership help identify moms and dads who would benefit from having a baby box.
The county has distributed about 20 of 118 boxes it purchased earlier this year with a $4,600 grant from the King County Office of Equity and Social Justice.
