MONTPELIER, Vt. — A Vermont family is going to be able to keep a 3-year-old wood duck brought home by a family dog as a chick, because state game officials relented on a plan to take the bird away.
Earlier this year, a game warden arrived at Kimberlee Stevens’ home in Middlesex to take the duck named Peep. When Stevens refused to hand the animal over, the warden promised to return with a search warrant. On Friday, the state Fish and Wildlife Department yielded and issued a permit allowing the family to keep the bird.
It’s against the law for private citizens to keep wild animals as pets.
Vermont Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Louis Porter says in this case, state officials thought it would be more expedient to let the family keep the duck.
