The Seahawks waived five players Wednesday. They were:
RB Cameron Marshall
C Drew Nowak
TE Ronnie Shields
LB Josh Shirley
WR Tyler Slavin
The big name on this list is Nowak. It was just six months ago that Nowak was Seattle’s starting center. Now he’s on the waiver wire.
Nowak was a central part of Seattle grand offensive line experiment, as the Seahawks inserted the converted defensive tackle into the starting lineup to start last season to replace Max Unger. Seattle’s line was a mess in the early part of the season, allowing quarterback Russell Wilson to be sacked 31 times through the first seven games. Nowak lost his starting spot to Patrick Lewis for good in the Seahawks’ ninth game, and over the final eight contests Seattle allowed just 15 sacks as the offense put up historical numbers. The turnaround can’t be attributed completely to Lewis replacing Nowak, but it also can’t be a coincidence. Nowak was eventually waived, signed to Seattle’s practice squad, the re-signed during the offseason to a futures contract.
Of the others, the most notable name is Shirley as he is a former University of Washington Husky. Shirley, Marshall, Shields and Slavin were all signed to futures contracts earlier this offseason.
The Seahawks needed to make moves in order to fit all their draft picks and undrafted rookie free agents on their 90-man roster. The team still has not released an official list of the 13 undrafted rookies it signed.
