Two Republicans have announced plans to challenge Democratic State Rep. Derek Stanford in the 1st Legislative District.
Bothell-area Republicans Neil Thannish and Brian Travis both have registered with the state Public Disclosure Commission as candidates for the position.
Stanford plans to seek a fourth four-year term in the State House of Representatives.
The 1st Legislative District includes most of Mountlake Terrace, all of Brier and Bothell, north Kirkland, unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland, and unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell including the Maltby area.
Registering with the Public Disclosure Commission allows a candidate to raise and spend money for the August primary and November general election. Candidates file for ballot position May16-20.
Stanford had reported raising $20,580 and spending $1,174 through Monday; Travis had reported raising $211 with no spending; and Thannish, the most recent to register, had yet to report any fundraising or spending.
The top two vote getters for each position in the primary qualify for the general-election ballot.
State Rep. Luis Moscoso, who holds the district’s other seat in the State House of Representatives, has announced that he plans to run for the senate position that Democrat Rosemary McAuliffe is giving up after six four-year terms. Republican Art Coday and Democrat Guy Palumbo also have said that they will seek the Senate seat.
Republican Ed Barton and Democrats Nicholas Carlson, Kyoko Matsumoto-Wright and Shelley Kloba have announced that they will seek the House position that Moscoso plans to give up.
