SEATTLE — Newly-minted top overall draft pick Breanna Stewart scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in her professional debut with the Seattle Storm, but the Phoenix Mercury rode a strong second half to an 81-73 victory in a the teams’ preseason opener at KeyArena.
Stewart, the former UConn star, scored the first five points of the game as Seattle jumped out to a 12-2 lead, but the Mercury took control in the third quarter with a 15-1 run.
Jewell Loyd, last season’s Rookie of the Year, led Seattle with 16 points.
Seattle will play its second and final preseason game at Phoenix at 3 p.m. on Sunday before opening the regular season at Los Angeles on May 15.
