New art festival offers artists, plant nurseries and speakers

LYNNWOOD — South Snohomish County has a brand new festival, one that features regional art, specialty plants and seminars by garden experts.

The free Spring Green Art Festival is May 6 and 7 at the Lynnwood Convention Center. The event features more than 25 nature-inspired artists, 11 local specialty plant nurseries and 10 speakers, including Debra Prinzing talking about the slow flower movement.

Organizers Barbara Sanderson and Marissa Motto hope to welcome crowds of art lovers and gardeners to their new festival, along with guys and kids looking for Mother’s Day gifts.

Sanderson, a glass artist who lives near Maltby and runs a studio, Glass Gardens NW, in south Everett, is a lifelong gardener.

“I make garden art, and gardeners are pleased to find out that I know what they are talking about when they are fitting art into their gardens,” Sanderson said.

Wanting a new place to sell her work, Sanderson threw out the idea of a garden art festival to a group of friends. Motto jumped on the bandwagon. A ceramic artist from the Seattle Hill area near Snohomish, Motto has experience organizing events for the Schack Art Center in Everett.

“We looked at other options for our festival, but found that the Lynnwood Convention Center was a perfect location,” Motto said. “And the city of Lynnwood is thrilled to have us there.”

The idea for the festival came together in the fall, and the women have been busy since.

“We speak the language of artists,” Motto said. “And we’ve and we have had an amazing response from artists who wanted to participate. It was actually difficult to pick and choose.”

Sponsors of the show include the nonprofit Friends of FHS (face, scapula and humerus muscular dystrophy) Research, along with Costco, Whole Foods, Swanson’s Nursery, University Book Store and Terra Bella Flowers, which will all have displays, too.

Some of the speakers will bring along their books to sell and will sign copies.

“Our goal is to make this an annual event,” Sanderson said. “We hope people agree.”
