A 64-year-old Aberdeen man allegedly admitted to stealing a pickup truck Monday because he “didn’t want to walk home,” according to Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers.
Shortly after noon, an auto parts driver for a local dealership reported that her work vehicle had been stolen while parked in a bank parking lot in the 700 block of Simpson Avenue. Officers broadcast a county-wide attempt to locate the vehicle.
Around 12:40 p.m., Hoquiam Animal Control officer Tom Taylor spotted the vehicle, a pickup, parked along the side of the Swanson’s grocery store with the 64-year-old sitting behind the wheel.
When approached by officers, the man tried to claim his brother had purchased the truck for him, saying he had been driving it for a week, said Myers. Once removed from the vehicle and handcuffed, officers found a receipt, dated May 2, for automotive parts which had just been picked up by the dealer’s employee before the alleged theft.
When the 64-year-old was interviewed, he told police he had stolen the truck because he “did not want to walk home,” according to Myers. He was later booked into the Grays Harbor County Jail on felony charges, including taking a motor vehicle without permission.
