Years ago, my son entered kindergarten reading at an independent level and quite comfortable with numbers. I was often asked by other parents, “How did you do it?” My response was nearly always the same — make reading a cozy, daily routine … and box scores! As a lover of baseball, he started each day with a check of his beloved Red Sox (our one failure!) That lead to notebooks full of fantasy teams and stats. He ushered his little brother into the same interests, and the two of them swapped stats on all major sports for years.
With my younger son about to graduate with honors from Everett High, and his brother a finance grad from UW, I am comfortable advocating for the return of those box scores.
Oh! I almost forgot to mention that, as a fifth-grade teacher, I’ve used them for decimal and percentage instruction for years!
