Here’s some highlights from the first day of the Seahawks’ rookie minicamp:
– Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said it was the best first day of rookie minicamp he can remember. He said it was very clean, which is a rarity on the first day after bringing in 60-plus newcomers.
– Quarterback is a position under the microscope, with Russell Wilson being the only sure thing currently on the roster. The players who are trying to impress this weekend are Trevone Boykin, Vernon Adams and Jake Heaps. Boykin, an undrafted free-agent signing out of TCU, said he had offers from Seattle and Dallas and chose Seattle because of Carroll. Adams, an undrafted tryout player out of Oregon, had no offers to sign, but is scheduled to also attend Washington’s rookie minicamp next week. Carroll talked about Boykin and Adams having similar playing styles to Wilson and that being a big reason why the Seahawks are interested.
– First-round draft pick Germain Ifedi was lined up at right guard. When Ifedi was selected last week the talk was of Ifedi playing right tackle. However, the Seahawks have changed course and will give Ifedi his first chance at guard, with free-agent signing J’Marcus Webb slated to start out at right tackle.
– When asked who he though had a good day, Carroll immediately mentioned receiver Kenny Lawler. The seventh-round draft choice out of California made several good catches, using his big frame to go up and catch balls in traffic.
– Archbishop Murphy High School graduate Taniela Tupou, who’s in camp on a tryout, is listed on the roster as a fullback. However Tupou, who played defensive tackle at the University of Washington, played as a defensive tackle Friday.
