RENTON — The biggest news to emerge from the second day of Seattle Seahawks rookie minicamp didn’t even involve a rookie.
Seattle offensive line coach Tom Cable spoke to ESPN’s John Clayton on Saturday morning, and during that conversation he revealed the Seahawks are moving Justin Britt to center.
Britt, Seattle’s second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, started at left guard last season. The previous season as a rookie he was the Seahawks’ starting right tackle. This will be Britt’s third position in three seasons in Seattle.
At center Britt will be competing with Patrick Lewis, who finished last season as the starter, and rookie Joey Hunt, who was selected in the sixth round of this year’s draft.
“I think what enables us to do that is the fact that he’s well-versed in our system,” Cable told Clayton about Britt’s position change. “Two years now, he’s played tackle, he’s played guard, he kind of understands it. The issue for him will be getting him comfortable and confident snapping.”
With Britt no longer in the mix at left guard, second-year player Mark Glowinski and rookie third-round pick Rees Odhiambo are the two primary candidates to start at left guard.
Britt’s move increases the shuffling on Seattle’s offensive line in the wake of the free-agency losses of starting left tackle Russell Okung and starting right guard J.R. Sweezy. Garry Gilliam is moving from right tackle to left tackle, rookie first-round pick Germain Ifedi is slated for right guard, and free-agent signing J’Marcus Webb is expected to line up at right tackle. Depending on what happens at center, the Seahawks might not have a single player on the offensive line in 2016 starting at the same position as 2015.
Collins offers dance lessons
Running back Alex Collins, selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft, has made something of a name for himself because of his involvement in Irish dance. On Saturday he was asked by the media whether he’s received any reaction to the videos of him dancing that are posted on social media. His response?
“I did (receive reaction),” Collins said. “I’m hoping to put a sign-up sheet out and hopefully some of you guys sign up and I get you guys out there.”
Has he been asked to perform?
“I have a few times,” Collins said. “I’m trying to save my performance so everybody’s there, get everybody to join in.”
Tupou plays fullback
Archbishop Murphy High School graduate Taniela Tupou, who’s attending camp on a tryout, switched sides of the ball Saturday, lining up at fullback.
Tupou, who played defensive tackle at the University of Washington, was used as a defensive tackle during Friday’s first day of camp. However, Tupou is listed on the roster as a fullback, and Saturday was his first chance to show what he could do in the backfield.
Tupou said he expects to play as a fullback during Sunday’s final day of camp.
