Arlington baseball beats MP 7-3, heads to state

EVERETT — Jake Russell had a two-run single in the fourth inning and came on in relief to earn the win as the Arlington Eagles eliminated the Marysville Pilchuck Tomahawks 7-3 Saturday to reach the Class 3A state tournament for the first time since 1994.

“Arlington struggled in baseball, but these kids have worked their butts off and they’ve worked really hard to build this program,” said fifth-year Arlington head coach Scott Striegel. “They’re taking this program to where it hasn’t been in a long, long time.”

Arlington broke it open while leading 3-1 in the fourth. Two walks and a hit to open the frame loaded the bases. Two outs, later Tristan Sheward walked to force in Trevor Kazen, and Russell followed with a two-run single to make it 6-1.

The Eagles built the early lead with a bases-loaded walk to Russell and RBI groundouts form Jack Sheward and Daniel Smith in the first two innings.

Russell relieved Avery Kindred in the fourth. Russell worked the final 3 1/3 innings while allowing one run on three hits and two walks.

MP pitchers combined to walk 10 Arlington hitters and the Tomahawks defense committed four errors in a steady drizzle that turned the field into a mud pit by the end of the game.

Russell drove in three runs while Gavin Rork and Kyle Bayer each had two hits and scored twice for Arlington (16-8). Trent Tinglestad and Dylen Boomer each had two hits including a double for MP (17-7).
