Democratic state Sen. Marko Liias of Lynnwood is reportedly preparing to launch a campaign for state treasurer.
Liias declined comment Monday. But an advisor confirmed he is seriously considering the contest for which there are already three candidates, including two Democrats.
“He is doing his due diligence and is getting a very positive response,” said Seattle political consultant Sandeep Kaushik. “I expect he’ll have a decision later this week.”
Liias must act by 4 p.m. Friday which is the deadline to file if he wants to appear on the Aug. 2 primary ballot.
While he ponders the race, others got into it Monday.
Democratic candidates Alec Fisken and John Paul Comerford and Republican Michael Waite each filed to run to succeed retiring treasurer, Jim McIntire.
Fisken, a former Seattle port commissioner, has been endorsed by McIntire while Waite, a senior vice president at the investment firm Bentall Kennedy, is backed by former Attorney General Rob McKenna and several elected Republican state lawmakers. Comerford is a financial counselor and pension consultant with his own firm, J.P. Comerford &Co.
Liias, who works for the city of Mukilteo, has served in the Legislature since 2008. He’s been integrally involved in the writing of transportation budgets as a member of the House Transportation Committee and now the Senate transportation panel.
This would be his first run for statewide office.
