MUKILTEO — Wear your dancing shoes, says conductor and artistic director Trevor Lutzenhiser.
The Mukilteo Community Orchestra’s season-ending concert Sunday features waltzing.
Yes, that’s right, dancing during the concert.
The free concert — 2 p.m. May 22 at Rosehill Community Center — is a concert of “Musical De-Lights,” a program of light classics that include audience favorites such as Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” and the “William Tell” Overture by Gioacchino Rossini.
Also on the program are Franz Lehar’s “Maxim March” from “The Merry Widow,” “Scherzo Pizzicato Ostinato” from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and the “Radetzky March” by Johann Straus Sr.
And then there are the waltzes.
Two Johann Strauss Jr. pieces will also be performed, the “Blue Danube” and the “Emperor.”
The orchestra has made special arrangements to offer free waltz instructions before the concert begins.
Audience members who want to dance are encouraged to show up at 1 p.m. for a bit of one-two-three coaching by Jodi Fleishman of Left Foot Boogie.
“I’m excited to be able to bring this new opportunity to the community,” Lutzenhiser said. “People who come to dance will enjoy it and come away with a new perspective on the orchestra and what we do. It will be fun for both orchestra members and the audience.”
For MCO fans planning for the fall, the orchestra has two special concerts already scheduled.
On Nov. 6, Mukilteo Community Orchestra will offer a youth-oriented concert to provide enhanced musical experiences to young people in the community. The concert is funded in part by a grant from the city of Mukilteo.
One of the pieces will be Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” — a charming tale of a young boy’s adventure in the meadow behind his grandfather’s house that also helps young people recognize musical themes. Each character in the story is represented by an instrument or group of instruments in the orchestra.
Then on Dec. 18, MCO will join forces with the Snohomish County Music Teachers Association in a concert featuring award-winning musicians from the association’s annual competition. These young musicians will perform movements from various concertos accompanied by the Mukilteo Community Orchestra.
Concerts are at 2 p.m. at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo. For more information, go to www.mukilteoorchestra.org.
