It was a big day for Everett Silvertips defenseman Brycen Martin, who signed a three-year, entry-level contract Saturday with the Buffalo Sabres. You can read the full release from the Silvertips here.
Martin was a third-round pick by the Sabres in the 2014 NHL draft and was traded from Saskatoon to Everett in December of last year. He played two games with Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, after the Silvertips were eliminated from the WHL playoffs by Seattle in April.

Fellow defenseman Noah Juulsen is the only other Tips player with a professional contract currently on the roster.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound blueliner has 131 points in 277 career WHL games with Everett, Saskatoon and Swift Current. That total includes 21 goals.
Martin is entering his overage season, but as a signed 20-year-old he is eligible to play fulltime in the AHL. I’m not sure if this clears up anything for next year’s overage situation. He is one of six players eligible to come back next year. One of those spots is certain to go to returning captain Dawson Leedahl. That leaves Graham Millar, Brandon Ralph, Lucas Skrumeda, Tristen Pfeifer and Martin as the five angling for those remaining two slots.
