Meet some turtles and maybe even take one home to stay
Celebrate World Turtle Day, 1 to 3 p.m. May 22, Edmonds Native Plant Demonstration Garden, Willow Creek Hatchery, northwest corner of Pine Street and Edmonds Way. Thayer “Frog Lady” Cueter will tell about the Washington native turtle, the western pond turtle, and also have some non-native turtles. These turtles will be available for adoption as indoor pets. Walk: Join the Sound Steppers Volkssport Club for a walk starting between 9 a.m. and noon on June 4 at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave West, Lynnwood. Walks are 3.1 miles or 6.2 miles. Free but register at www.soundsteppers.org.
BeWild: The next speaker in The Mountaineers speaker series is nurse and climber Libby Sauter. She holds the female speed record for The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite. She will speak at 7 p.m. June 2 at the Seattle Program Center, 7700 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle. Get more info and tickets, $12, at www.mountaineers.org. The next speakers in the series are Washington native Jess Roskelley and Ben Erdmann, who will speak June 22.
Work day: The Mountaineers, in a partnership the Forest Service and Washington Climbers Coalition, are organizing a work day June 4 at the Eight Mile Trail at Three O’Clock Rock near Darrington. Volunteers can register at www.mountaineers.org/explore/activities/stewardship-darrington-area-1. You do not need to be a Mountaineers member, but you do need to make a free account on their website to register.
Trails: National Trails Day is June 4. Events are planned around the region and you can find those closest to you at nationaltrailsday.americanhiking.org.
Bike donations: Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop, 2531 Broadway Ave., Everett, seeks donations of kids’ bikes for its Kid’s Bike Swap from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 12. Bikes with 20-inch and 24-inch wheels are especially needed. Donations earn credit for larger bicycles. Get details at: www.sharingwheels.org.
