YAKIMA — The North Sound Christian girls basketball team is one win away from making school history.
North Sound defeated Wishkah Valley 43-27 Wednesday night in the first round of the 1B girls state basketball tournament, scoring 18 points in the final quarter with its six-person team that head coach Bill Kelley said “continues to amaze him, you would think they would wear out.” North Sound play a quarterfinal game at 9 p.m. tonight. If it wins, it will be the furthest the team has advanced in North Sound history Kelley said.
And Kelley doesn’t see his “super six” team settling at the thought of earning a trophy, which would be the first in the school’s history.
“We are always very thankful when we can come out with a win, and we are really excited about the possibility of earning our way into the semifinals,” Kelley said. “Hopefully we can keep this thing going.”
Melissa Castor led North Sound with 17 points, eight in the fourth quarter, and eight rebounds. Jessica Castor came off the bench for nine rebounds, and Jenna Otis scored all 10 of her points in the second half to go with three steals.

Bickleton 50, Lummi 35: At Yakima, Katelynn Clinton set the Class 1B single-game tournament scoring record with 35 points to lead Bickleton to a 50-35 first-round win over Lummi in the girls state tournament Wednesday. Kyla Frajman led Lummi (8-13) with 19 points and 17 rebounds. She also blocked eight shots, tying the single-game record held by two others.
Boys basketball
St John-Endicott 59, Tulalip Heritage 43: At Yakima, Warren Miller poured in a team-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading St. John-Endicott to a 59-43 first-round victory over Tulalip Heritage in the Class 1B boys state tournament Wednesday.
Miller, averaging 13.3 points per game, hit eight of 16 shots, and had two assists and a blocked shot. Teammates Dylan Schmick and Cole McCanna chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively.
SJE (14-11) built a 20-10 lead after the first quarter, and TH (13-11) never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
SJE shot 54 percent (14 of 26) in the second half while pulling away.
Shawn Comenote made eight of nine shots and led the Hawks with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. James Whitebear added 10 points.

Lummi 65, King’s Way Christian 34: At Yakima, Ronomus Revey led four Lummi players in double figures with 19 points. David James added 15 points, and Kyle Finkbonner and Tony Rivera each scored 13 for Lummi (21-2). Revey made eight of 12 shots and three of four free throws.
Rosalia 44, Lopez Island 23: At Yakima, Jim Maley scored 13 points as top-ranked Rosalia cruised past Lopez, which suffered from 20 turnovers and 21 percent shooting.
