LACEY —- It didn’t take long for the Marysville Pilchuck softball team’s bats to wake up Friday morning.
Marysville Pilchuck, which averages about 11 runs per game, defeated Shadle Park 9-4 in the first round of the 3A state softball tournament at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.
The Tomahawks face the Columbia River in a 3A state quarterfinal at 4 p.m.
Mckenzie Justice got the scoring started for Marysville Pilchuck (19-6 overall) with a three-run home run in the top of the third inning. Senior Kylie Lopez followed Justice’s homer with a solo home run to help the Tomahawks take a 4-1 lead over Shadle Park (17-4), the No. 1 seed from Districts 7/8.
Marysville Pilchuck (19-6) added to its lead with a four-run fourth inning to take control of the game. Justice, who finished the game with five RBI, hit a two-run single and Lily Fischer added a two-run single.
Lexie Phelps added a solo home run in the top of the seventh to cap the scoring for the Tomahawks.
Shadle Park got three runs in the seventh before Justice, Marysville Pilchuck’s pitcher, and the Tomahawks clinched the victory.
