LAKE STEVENS — A 71-year-old man jailed Saturday after his roommate was shot had been arrested before in a domestic-violence incident involving the same woman.
According to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, the earlier incident occurred about 10 days ago and involved an argument over lawn mowing.
Initially, the police believed the lawn-mowing argument led to the shooting on Saturday. That detail was found to be inaccurate as the investigation proceeded, Lt. Todd Swenson said.
The suspect had not returned to the home since the earlier incident, and the victim, a 49-year-old woman, had sought a protection order against him. The order had not yet been served.
At about 2:15 p.m. Saturday, the 71-year-old man returned to the house in the 400 block of E Lake Shore Drive.
The woman called 911. While the woman was on the phone with the 911 operator, the man entered the home and reportedly shot the woman once in the abdomen.
The suspect then put the handgun down and walked outside to wait for sheriff’s deputies to arrive. He was arrested without incident and booked into Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree assault involving domestic violence and a firearm.
The victim was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
