School Winners

EvCC honors graduates to present their final projects

Everett Community College’s 2016 honors graduates will present their final projects and Grammy-nominated composer Ron Jones will speak at the college’s honors forum from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at EvCC, 2000 Tower St. The event is open to the public.

Michelle Geiszler, of Everett, studied government and non-government organizations that provide aid abroad.

Jerry Jarvis, of Stanwood, created a remote-controlled drone.

Lyndsey Ketz, of Marysville, completed an electronic education portfolio.

Greer King, of Lake Stevens, researched sports psychology in rowing.

Ashley Lefeat, of Everett, conducted an in-depth look into the prison system.

Christa Moushey, of Granite Falls, created a promotional film about EvCC’s drama program.

Dawn Woodworth, of Snohomish, developed a “A Night at the Museum” event for the Burke Museum.

Kiwanis honor students

The Kiwanis Club of Snohomish recently recognized its Snohomish School District Students of the Quarter. Honored were Lisa Ward and Sarah Ruonavaara (Centennial Middle), Mitchell Dohrman and Nathan Peters (Valley View Middle), Kazia Curry and Cyan Baxter (AIM High), Angelica Vaseliev, Emily Condit, Jenna McLean and Eric Olvera (Glacier Peak High), and Holli Welker, Michaela Rogalinski, Madison VanSlightenhorst and Logan Massena (Snohomish High).

Rotary hails standout kids

The Stanwood-Camano Island Rotary recently recognized outstanding students from the Stanwood-Camano School District: William Kallock and Kaylee Anderson (Twin City Elementary), Natalie Steowbridge and Tyler Lofgren (Cedarhome Elementary), Madison Moore and Preston Pierce (Port Susan Middle), and Kaitlynn Chappell and Talon Pomerinke (Lincoln Hill High School).

Wilson a model civics teacher

The Legislature honored Mike Wilson, a teacher at Cascade High School, as one of its Civic Educators of 2016.

Wilson engages students with projects like a mock Congress, guest speakers and classroom debates, as well as a field trip to Washington, D.C., for a presidential inauguration and other off-campus efforts. If his students turn 18 while in his class, he’ll also make sure they have time to register to vote.

Hi-Q all-star team honors

Students from eight of the schools competing in Hi-Q competition this year have named their “Hi-Q All-Star” team members to honor their achievements. Students are: Colton Lee, from first-place Jackson High School, Hayden Davis, from second-place Lake Stevens High School, Liam McDonnell (Archbishop Murphy), Richard Doan (Lynnwood), Jessica Abele (Marysville Getchell), Logan Plant (Marysville Pilchuck), Jacob Ostlund (Meadowdale) and Riley Cunningham (Stanwood).

Compost company ‘seeds’ Everett teen’s studies

Everett High School senior Dylan Scanes received a $2,500 scholarship from Cedar Grove Composting’s “Seeds for Scholars” program. Scanes also has the opportunity to interview for summer internships with the Everett-based company. Scanes plans to study biology this fall at Gonzaga University.

Everett Christian’s students use Serve-a-Thon to help others

Everett Christian School students and staff celebrated their annual Serve-a-Thon on May 20 with service projects in Everett. The unique fundraiser aimed to highlight the school’s mission.

Middle school students and staff planted flowers and cleaned out overgrown bushes at Legion Park.

Third- and fourth-grade students sorted 1,000 pounds of food at the Everett Food Bank. They also planted vegetables in school garden beds for a later harvest to donate to the food bank.

First- and second-grade students sang and gave homemade cards to residents of Everett Plaza and Broadway Plaza.
