ORTING — Authorities say the president of the Orting School Board killed herself on the day she was due to appear in court for allegedly stealing from her homeowners association.
The News Tribune reported that Iris Lilley’s family found her body Tuesday in a wooded area of Graham after leaving a note.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office says the death was suicide.
Lilley, 59, had been charged with theft in May for allegedly withdrawing over $162,000 from the association’s bank accounts.
Lilley was appointed to the Orting School Board in January 2014 to fill a vacancy and was elected to the seat in November.
School District Superintendent Marci Shepard issued a statement expressing sorrow over Lilley’s death, saying the charges against her were unrelated to the school board.
