EVERETT — A 9-year-old boy found last week at the bottom of an apartment complex pool in south Everett has died.
The child, a fourth-grade student at Horizon Elementary School, died Sunday afternoon from brain damage due to a lack of oxygen, Everett police Sgt. Maryjane Hacker said Monday.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office informed Everett police of his death, Hacker said.
He was identified as Ariel Jasso-Aranda.
His classmates on Monday were informed of his death and counselors were available, Horizon Principal Leslie Clauson wrote in a letter to parents.
“We have also engaged our fourth graders in activities which will help them to express how they are feeling about their loss,” Clauson said. “We will continue to offer these services as long as they are needed.”
The Everett boy was pulled from the swimming pool at the Arterra Apartments, 711 W Casino Road, on the afternoon of June 7. His family lived in the complex.
A bystander discovered the child at the bottom of the pool, pulled him out and started CPR, according to the Everett Fire Department.
Medic 6 from the fire department was dispatched on the drowning report. Crews arrived within three minutes of being called and started treating the child.
They were able to bring back a pulse and transported the boy to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. He later was taken to Seattle Children’s Hospital where died Sunday.
The boy lived a few blocks from his school. A parent liaison working at Horizon is a friend of the boy’s mother and the school has tried to support the family, Mukilteo School District spokesman Andy Muntz said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ariel’s family and our school community as we grieve together this loss,” Clauson wrote in the letter to parents.
