Boys Athlete of the Year | Finalists

The other finalists for the Herald’s 2016 Boys High School Athlete of the Year as selected in voting on Heraldnet.com:

Kobe McDaniel | Snohomish

McDaniel was a second-team All-Wesco 4A quarterback for the Panthers as a senior and helped lead the team to the postseason for the first time under head coach Kai Smalley. McDaniel also played basketball and baseball for the Panthers and boasts a 3.4 GPA.

Mason McKenzie | Darrington

McKenzie is a three-time state wrestling champion with a combined record of 104-13 in his four years of competition. He placed second in the state as a freshman before winning the state title as a sophomore, junior and senior in the 220-pound weight class. He was named a first-team all-league offensive lineman and linebacker as a sophomore and junior and named MVP of the football team as a senior. He served his community in the Oso mudslide relief efforts and assisted for four years coaching the Darrington Middle School wrestling team.

Nick Blair | Everett

Blair is a three-year letter winner in both football and track. He recently won his first individual track state championship at the 3A state meet, placing first in the shot put. He also placed fifth in the discus. Blair will continue his football career at Eastern Washington University this fall and holds a 3.617 GPA.

Nate Shubert | Kamiak

Shubert, who has a football scholarship to Idaho State University, is a three-year letterman in football and basketball, two-year letterman in baseball and earned his first letter in track as a senior. He was a first-team All-Wesco 4A selection as a tight end in both 2014 and 2015 and has been selected to participate in this year’s annual East/West All-Star game. He took several AP classes, carried a 3.73 GPA and was involved in numerous school and community activities.

Robert Miles Jr. | Tulalip Heritage

Miles Jr. played football and basketball all four years of his high school career and was one of the best players on both teams all four years. Academically, Miles is known for being a good student and respectful in the classroom.

EvCC coach Chet Hovde, who ‘lived for’ basketball, dies at 77

Coach Hovde graduated from Everett High School in 1965. He spent 33 years as the women’s basketball coach at the community college.
