Mountlake Terrace’s Chinne Okoronkwo has been named the Washington Gatorade Track and Field Girls Athlete of the Year.
Okoronkwo won three state championships for a second consecutive season at this year’s 3A state track meet, winning the long jump, pole vault and the triple jump. The triple jump championship completed a sweep for Okoronwko, who also won the state title as a freshman, sophomore and junior. The long jump championship was her third consecutive state title in that event. She also won the pole vault as a junior as senior after finishing second as a freshman and sophomore.
Okoronkwo owns the state record in the triple jump with a mark of 42 feet, 7.75 inches and set the state record in the pole vault as a senior with a mark of 13 feet, 8 inches.
Okoronkwo maintained a 3.92 grade point average, was the editor of the school yearbook and volunteered in many community service projects through her church. She will continue her track career at the University of Wisconsin, where she will attend on a full athletic scholarship.
