EVERETT— The deadline is rapidly approaching to ensure you can vote in the upcoming primary.
The last day to register online or by mail for the Aug. 2 election is July 4. If you mail your registration in, it must be postmarked no later than that date. That’s also the final day to update an existing registration with any changes, such a new address.
Brand new Washington voters can register up until July 25, but after July 4 must do so in person at the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office, 3000 Rockefeller Ave. in Everett.
Voters will be making many decisions in this year’s primary.
For example, they will decide the fate of a proposed countywide ballot measure to hike the sales tax by two-tenths of a penny. If passed, some of those dollars would go to hire more deputy sheriffs and improve their training for dealing with people who suffer from mental illness or drug addiction.
A chunk of the new dollars would go directly to cities to deal with the effects of burgeoning heroin use and increasing numbers of homeless adults.
Voters also will be whittling the list of candidates to two finalists for a slew of state and federal offices.
In Snohomish County, the ballot also will include contests for one U.S. senate seat, three U.S. House seats and nine statewide executive offices, including governor. There also will be 14 state House seats and three state Senate seats.
