EVERETT — A new aerospace training center will open its doors at Paine Field in June.
The plan to create the Washington Aerospace Training and Research Center was announced last summer, but money delays pushed back the center’s opening. Classes begin June 7.
“The training center will provide flexible and nimble training opportunities in manufacturing, avionics and composites that meet the fast-paced needs of the aerospace industry,” said Larry Cluphf, center director of operations.
The training the center will provide, in partnership with community colleges and universities, will be driven by workforce supply and demand. Via the center, technical experts will provide short, hands-on, job-specific training to employees at convenient times.
“Opening the center is a huge step for our industry and will provide great opportunities to promote and enhance the future of aerospace statewide,” said Linda Lanham, executive director of the Aerospace Futures Alliance.
Funding for the center has come from the local, state and federal government. Industry also has played a significant role in lining up tools and equipment.
The Boeing Co. has donated $2.5 million for tools, materials and equipment that will be used to teach classes in assembly mechanic, electrical, hydraulics, composites and quality assurance.
The center has received a $1.75 million appropriation from Washington state, a $600,000 federal appropriation, $450,000 of the governor’s Workforce Investment Act discretionary funds for its facility in Everett and a $250,000 Innovation Partnership Zone award from the Washington state Department of Commerce.
An opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 3 at the center, located on 100th Street SW at Paine Field in south Everett.
