Intermec makes hardware and software — including barcode, voice-recognition and radio frequency identification (RFID) systems — to help companies track inventory and supplies.
Prior to the layoff, Intermec employed 2,300 people. A filing today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said the layoffs are “primarily focused on North America and Europe” and eventually could save $19 million to $21 million annually, and $7 million to $8 million in 2012 alone.
Spokeswoman Nikolett Bacso would only add, “Intermec will notify affected employees as soon as possible. Impacted employees will receive a severance package from the company.”
The layoffs, according to Intermec’s announcement, will “lower the company’s general and administrative and support costs while limiting the impact on research and development and global sales operations, especially in higher growth regions such as Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Eastern Europe.”
Last month the company announced it lost $242.1 million in the first quarter, and a few weeks earlier it said that CEO Patrick J. Byrne had left the firm and that Chairman Allen J. Lauer would serve as interim CEO and president until a permanent successor could be hired.

Intermec Announces Restructuring Plan
EVERETT, Wash.(BUSINESS WIRE)Intermec, Inc. (NYSE:IN), today announced a corporate restructuring plan to better align its cost structure with its current and anticipated needs by lowering costs primarily in North America and Europe. The restructuring plan seeks to lower the company’s general and administrative and support costs while limiting the impact on research and development and global sales operations, especially in higher growth regions such as Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Eastern Europe.

The company expects to eliminate approximately 170 positions or 7% of its global workforce and will record total onetime employee separation expenses and related costs of approximately $8 million to $9 million on a pretax basis. Approximately $6 million to $7 million of these restructuring costs will be recorded in the second quarter of 2012. The company anticipates that the restructuring will generate annual cost savings of approximately $19 million to $21 million.
Investments the company has made to expand its solutions strategy, including the acquisition of Vocollect which is not directly impacted by the restructuring plan, continue to perform inline with expectations.
