A new sign is up at Everett Mall, and it’s actually visible from I-5. The old sign was smaller and obscured by trees. Those trees have been felled, and Clarity Signs of Kenmore is installing the new one.
The mall, two-thirds of which is owned by Steadfast Companies of Irvine, Calif., had fallen on fiscally challenging times, with Steadfast in default on a $98 million loan. But last month Steadfast got a cash infusion from Canyon-Johnson Urban Funds (as in retired NBA star Earvin “Magic” Johnson), and improvements are under way. Besides the sign, general contractor Kirtley-Cole Associates of Everett is improving areas of the parking lot on the east and south sides of Everett Mall.
By the way, Johnson began his basketball career in Lansing, Mich. — at Everett High School.
