What makes a sandwich shop great? Some of the attributes I look for are a great kids menu, fresh bread, great salads and homemade soups. A nice dining area and friendly staff are also pluses.
Firestation Deli is one of my newest favorites.
The walls are done up like a old fire station with wonderful photos of firefighters in action. There is outdoor dining when the weather is good. The menu is extensive. There are, of course, sub sandwiches but also press-grilled focaccia paninis, toasted subs, wraps, soups, deli salads and homemade baked goods like cinnamon rolls and sugar cookies.
On a recent visit I went with my son, Bryson, for lunch. I ordered a wild berry smoothie (about $3), an Asian ginger wrap ($7.99) and a “Royal” cookie (under $2).
Bryson went with his standby grilled cheese ($5.99) on wheat from the kids menu.
My smoothie and cookie were brought out quickly. The smoothie was very tasty and not too sweet.
My cookie was fantastic, made with coconut, oatmeal, macadamia nuts and chocolate chips. I took one nibble and ended eating the whole thing before my wrap came out.
My wrap, a spinach wrapper filled with grilled chicken, cabbage, crunchy noodles, sliced almonds and sesame ginger dressing, was huge, enough for two hungry people.
I liked all the yummy Asian flavors that I enjoy but in an easy-to-eat wrap. I felt like I was eating a health lunch because of all the vegetables in the wrap.
Bryson’s meal was served in a cute kid’s fire helmet. What I didn’t realize when we ordered is that he would get only half a sandwich, which is great for little ones but I would have paid the extra $2 for a whole sandwich because it wasn’t quite enough food for my 10-year-old.
The grilled cheese was great and included milk, apple slices and fruit snacks.
Firestation Deli offers box lunches, catering and a different soup daily. They also have a limited breakfast menu with a full coffee bar.
