Bicycle Extravaganza for kids Saturday in Edmonds

You’ve been meaning to take the kids to ride the local bike trails, and now here’s just the motivation needed.

The GayLynne Ullerich Bicycle Extravaganza is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Seaview Elementary School, 8426 188th St. SW, Edmonds.

The extravaganza is meant to be a celebration of bicycling for elementary school ages and recognizes the “bikes in schools” program in the Edmonds School District, according to Amy and Lib Rust, who are hosting the event.

The extravaganza will include a bike rodeo with members of the Cascade Bicycle Club. Students can ride through various courses to polish their skills.

Also, technicians from REI will provide free minor bicycle tune-ups along with some basics of bicycling for new riders.

There will also be a bicycle exchange and people can bring in a bike that is too small to exchange for a bigger bike. Visitors can also donate bicycles if they wish.

The event is also to honor GayLynne Ullerich, a physical education teacher at Madrona K-8 who also worked in the bicycle department at the Alderwood REI and an avid cyclist. Ullerich died in January 2011 after a car accident.

She played an instrumental part in bringing the bikes-in-schools program to the Edmonds School District, the Rusts said.

This is the second year for the program.
