Here’s a picture of the harvest from our vegetable garden last Saturday. That’s almost $20 worth of organic vegetables pulled from our side-yard. So vegetable gardening must be saving our family a lot of money, right?
Well, actually…. I added it up, and over the past five years we have spent close to $600 on our vegetable garden. That would include the cost of building raised beds, having soil delivered, planting perennials, and purchasing various composters and tomato cages. It took a lot of capital to get our backyard farm going.
Even now that we harvest about five dollars’ worth of produce a day from our garden, it’s not like the food we are growing is going to ward off hunger. Snap peas are yummy, but they don’t really fill you up! Ditto with rainbow chard.
Hopefully, many years from now the fruit trees we have planted will be pumping out some real food. Until then, sustenance comes from the love of gardening. Watching my seven year old dig up potatoes is pretty cool too.
