What: Tsuga mertensiana, or mountain hemlock, one of the Northwest’s most beautiful native evergreens.
Why: It develops into a slender small tree with gracefully layered side branches. It is excellent for creating an alpine look in the landscape. No serious disease or insect problems are common to this tree.
Where: Mountain hemlock is best in full sun to light shade. It is drought tolerant once established.
Size: Reaches a height of 20 feet with a spread of 6 feet.
